“The movie is all dressed up with somewhere to go – an armchair vacation for the coronavirus pandemic-restrained viewer as well as a half-hearted cautionary tale about wealth and social privilege. It’s so gorgeous looking that even the extras are impeccably clad and blood leaves an elegant pattern on the wall.”

“The spectacle that it conjures up is bright and bewitching but its dazzle is neither blinding nor consistent. But despite its old-fashioned and predictable trajectory, the film does not lose its grip on the flow of the narrative nor its hold on the audience. It’s a classically structured, well-acted and sturdily executed puzzle.”

“The camera glides long distances in the air, romancing a vast range of picturesque settings (the pyramids, the desert, the lakes). Even the background score is appropriately theatrical. It doesn’t take long to be a part of this world — a film so beautiful I could watch it on mute…  A thriller needs deflections and red herrings to keep us guessing, but Death on the Nile doesn’t choose its arsenal well. And even though the movie credibly fleshes out the softer side of Poirot, it sometimes slips into long schmaltzy sermons… The cumulative effect is a strange concoction — one that both delights and disappoints — elevating Poirot, the man, but letting down Poirot, the detective.”
